PHILADELPHIA, PA [DOEPA]

On Sunday, July 19, 2026, following the Divine Liturgy at St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Diocesan Cathedral of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, the faithful and community present gathered for the annual blessing of vehicles, continuing the tradition observed on the Sunday closest to the Feast of the Holy, Glorious Prophet Elijah.

Following the dismissal, Archpriest Victor Gorodenchuk, Cathedral Dean and Dean of the Philadelphia Deanery, and the faithful processed outside the Cathedral, where he offered prayers for the safety and protection of all who travel before blessing each automobile with holy water.

The annual tradition is observed in connection with the Feast of the Prophet Elijah, commemorated by the Orthodox Church on July 20. The Prophet Elijah was taken bodily into heaven in a fiery chariot, many Orthodox Christian communities have long associated his feast with prayers for travelers and the blessing of vehicles, asking his intercessions and God's continued protection for those who travel by road. The blessing serves as a reminder that every aspect of the Christian life, including the ordinary routines of travel and daily work, is sanctified through the prayers of the Church. As another year of travel begins, the faithful depart with the assurance of God's blessing and the prayers of the Holy Prophet Elijah accompanying them wherever the road may lead.
