Thanksgiving Dinner for Local Veterans • Edwardsville

St. John the Baptist Provides Thanksgiving Meal to Veterans - 11/19/2021

On Saturday, November 19, the community of St. John the Baptist visited our Friends at St. Hedwig’s Village, a shelter for veterans to share a Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings. As we enter the Advent Fast it is important to the Parish to remember those who may be forgotten and help those less fortunate. Truthfully, it brings the Parish great joy.
This community service project, as well as a Christmas Dinner in December, is sponsored by the Sunday School. Through the years, the entire parish has become involved, donating food, gift cards, money and especially time to make the dinners a rousing success. Parishioners spend an afternoon breaking bread and enjoying fellowship with the veterans. The parish was unable to spend time with our friends last year due to the circumstances at the time, and were doubly blessed to be able to share an afternoon and catch up with our “guests.” Being a good neighbor in our community is of key importance to the Parish, and this nearly decade old project is one of many undertaken during the year.
Fr. Michael Evans served as our clergy, leading all in prayer before eating. Each veteran was given 2 large bags of food afterwards. We look forward to visiting our community again in a month when we celebrate the Nativity.
