Diocesan Clergy meets at St. Michael's Orthodox Church - 10/11/13

On Friday, October 11, 2013 the OCA Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania sponsored a clergy retreat at St. Michael’s Church Center in Jermyn, PA featuring Dr. Daniel Hinshaw as the guest speaker. Dr. Hinshaw is an Orthodox Christian layman and practicing physician and teaches Palliative Care as a Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at Transylvania University in Brasov, Romania, and as Visiting Professor of Palliative Care at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York. He recently published the book, Suffering and the Nature of Healing.

Dr. Hinshaw spoke on the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions of the dying process and the pastoral needs of caregivers to the sick and dying and reviewed the relationship of modern health care practice to traditional Christianity and the Church’s understanding of health, disease, and healing, in order to give a better sense of how traditional Christianity can more effectively interface with secular health care.
